We are surrounded by people everyday
Sometimes, with no true motive or intention, a complete stranger will affect us in a way that may, ever so slightly, shift our life. And, more likely than not, they will never know.
THIS IS WHAT DEAR STRANGER LETTERS ARE FOR
To acknowledge the people who silently make us smile, or think, or imagine, or dream a little bit more. To say thank you to our neighbors and to remind others, and ourselves, that our presence in this world never goes unnoticed.
In our often fast-paced lives, a simple shared moment with others can help remind us of our humanity. A quick, fleeting encounter shows us that a "stranger" isn't so strange after all.
FAQs
Are these actually anonymous?
Yes! Unless you choose to add your name or contact info to your letter, there is no way for me to see any information about who is submitting the letter. I highly encourage you to write from the heart.
Will my letter be posted online?
Maybe! We will select a letter periodically to be posted on our Instagram and website.
If you would prefer your letter not be posted on our page and website, please select “I do not want my letter posted” when submitting. Why write a letter and not post it, you ask? Because the practice of writing it and acknowledging our gratitude for those around us is valuable in and of itself.
Do I need to be a “writer”?
You do not need to be a professional or even self-proclaimed “writer” to join in. This project is open to anyone and everyone.
Do I need to start conversations with strangers?
Up to you! The best moments that Dear Stranger letters recount are the ones that happen naturally. There is no forced conversation or trying to glean something from someone. Sometimes, you may not even speak to someone at all. These are shared moments, spoken or unspoken, that leave a positive impression on you.
Can I write to someone I know?
The spirit of this project is to acknowledge people we don’t know... those who briefly enter our lives yet still have an ability to impact us. Though I’m all for celebrating the ones we know and love, please aim your letter a new fellow human.
Can I see examples?
Of course. Visit our “Letters” page or our Instagram, @dearstranger.letters, to see previously submitted letters.
Is there an age limit?
No. All are welcome.
